Sunday’s a Comin’

It’s the End of the World!!! ( as we know it)

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.”  Luke‬ ‭21‬:‭25‬-‭26‬

What’s a preacher to do with a text like this one?

Well, tomorrow is the first Sunday of Advent. A season for waiting and watching for the coming of Christ. In fact the word, “Advent” literally meaning, “coming.” We use the word to refer to both the first and second coming of Jesus. In a couple short weeks we will tell the stories of His first arrival – you know Christmas. We love those quiet stories of shepherds, angels, wise men and a virgin birth all announcing the arrival of baby Jesus.

However, this second coming sounds like it’s going to be much louder, in fact, earth shattering and downright scary. So we are more comfortable to set the second coming aside and focus on the first. Besides it’s been over 2000 years, and not too many Christians are waiting and watching too much these days. Come to think of it, how do we keep waiting and watching for something that seems will never happen? Is anyone still waiting for His return anymore?

Tomorrow we begin a new series, “People Get Ready” and the theme is “Preparation. So ready or not, I invite you to join us.
