Palm Sunday

“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” Luke‬ ‭19‬:‭40‬

My grandma Colwell had the following sign on her bathroom wall dating 1930:

“I wisht I was a little rock A-settn’ on a hill,A-doin’ nothin’ all day long Cept jest a-settin’ still.I wouldn’t sleep, I wouldn’t eat,  I wouldn’t even wash.I’d jest set there a hunnert years An’ rest m’self, b’gosh!”

It’s a nice thought. To step out of the rat race – to not get too involved in life – to just sit back, rest and watch the chaotic world pass by. Nice and boring, that is. Now rocks are useful as strong foundation or valuable gems. They can also be harmful when used as weapons when thrown at another person. But rocks are passive. As Paul Simon sings, “and a rock feels no pain.” They just sit around waiting to be unearthed and used for good or evil, but they do not cry out, much less speak. Or do they?
That first Palm Sunday was a day of excitement and mixed emotions as Jesus enters Jerusalem as a conquering hero. Crowds lined the street shouting and proclaiming him as king while the religious leaders were shouting at Jesus to make his disciples be quiet. Then to create more ripples in our Holy Week pond, Jesus tells them if everyone shuts up the stones would take over and shout out.
We all have a choice to wave our palms branches in praise or sit quiet as a rock and refuse to participate in the work of God’s kingdom. We can set on the fence and cheer from the sidelines or we can get in the game. Personally, I do not want to make the rocks cry out by “ just A-settin’ on a hill,” and watching Jesus pass me by. How about you?
