This very popular, contemporary Christmas song ponders whether Mary had any clue about who her newborn son would be and what He would accomplish. It goes:
“Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy would one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy would save our sons and daughters? Did you know that your Baby Boy has come to make you new? This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you.”
As we listen to the Christmas story over the next couple of weeks we may think we know it pretty well. But did you know that there was no innkeeper in the story? Did you know the word used for “Inn” did not refer to some commercial establishment that would not have existed in a little town like Bethlehem, but simply a place of lodging like a home? Did you know there were probably more than three magi and they did not show up until much later? Did you know many believe the “star” they followed could have been a comet, a nova, or maybe a planet?
The point is there is much we do not know about the specific details, but we do know there was no room for Jesus either in Bethlehem or the world. We know why we came and we do know whom he came for.
This song that asks Mary if she knew, can also ask the same of each of us. Do you know?
Come and see…
