(So we agreed we believe in life after death, but what about the church after Easter?)
Do you think God has a sense of humor? Well just take a look at your pastor, or better yet, have you taken a good look in the mirror lately?
Easter is God’s last laugh on death. Earlier, theologians like Augustine, Gregory of Nyssa and John Chrysostom mused that God played a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead. “Risis paschalis” or the Easter laugh the early theologians called it.
This Sunday we will resurrect an old Easter custom begun by the Greeks in the early centuries of Christianity – “Holy Humor Sunday” which continues to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. “Bright Sunday” (the Sunday after Easter), was observed by the faithful as “days of joy and laughter” with parties and picnics to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. Churchgoers and pastors played practical jokes on each other, drenched each other with water, told jokes, sang, and danced. Let’s keep the resurrection party going because Jesus is the life of the party!
Wear your brightest, loudest clothes and funniest hats. Bring your funniest (clean) jokes to share and practice smiling –look in the mirror. However, no drenching the pastor with water.
Come and see, Pastor Rob
