“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children,” Ephesians 5:1 NRSV
Imitate God? That’s kind of asking a bit much, isn’t it Paul?
We are told we are made in God’s image, but to be like God is a tall order especially if we try to imitate the Almighty by using our own ability. Instead, when we accept whose child, we are and who made it possible for us to be reconciled with our Heavenly Father, we receive power to be who we were created to be.
As we worship God, have fellowship with God’s people, study God’s word, obey his commands, and seek to reflect his character, something wonderful emerges. We say things God would say, we do things God would do. We forgive, we share, and we love. In time an image begins to appear. We begin to look more and more like God. God’s goal is simply to rub away anything that is not of him so the inborn image of God can be seen in us.
For Sunday, take a look at Ephesians 5 to get a better picture of what it looks like to be imitators of God, and then…
Come and see,
