Last week I ended the service with a “teaser” that we would have a special guest this Sunday. I said he would be traveling a few thousand miles over a couple thousand years. However, there’s been a change in my plans. Something about airport security and time travel restrictions, but that’s all I know.
So, I’m thinking what a perfect illustration of our Advent adventure. Angels appear and suddenly everyone in the story has to change their plans. Zechariah, Elizabeth, Joseph, and shepherds all were told that God was moving into the neighborhood and thing we’re about to change. Look at Mary for instance. Her plans for a happy, simple life with Joseph run into the Angel Gabriel, and Boom!!! A big-time change of plans!
“Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:30 NIV
You’ve found favor with God!? Really? My initial reaction may have been, “Lord, don’t do me any favors.” But not Mary, she takes in this life changing announcement and she – get this – she sings a song of praise with a “bring it on” attitude. How do we do when circumstances, events or maybe angels throw us a curve ball?
I’m thinking I need to learn to sing better. Tomorrow we’ll listen to Mary’s song and perhaps we can sing along and let her teach us how to simply trust God more.
So what other plans you may have, we’d love for you to join us.
