Remember the TV series, “E.R.?”
Simply for our enjoyment, Mary Alice and I just finished a 3-month binge-watching all 17 seasons of this hospital drama. It had been a decade or two since we first viewed this show so it was kind of fresh. One common theme in almost every episode is when someone coded and had to be “shocked” back to like with a defibrillator.
You know the drill, “ Charge! …Clear! …Contact!” …and then Ker-pow! If the patient was lucky he or she returned a normal heart rhythm, if not well….As I read through Acts 4:5-35, my imagination kept returning to this process of shocking someone back to life. In response to Peter’s preaching, the religious leaders kept asking him, “By what power do you do this( v5)?”
The theme of God’s power (a.k.a. Holy Spirt ), giving birth, life, and joy to the church runs rampant through the book of Acts. It also challenges us to ask, has the churched coded today? I mean with the decline of Christianity in America it seems we have less power to witness as we once did.
I for one believe Jesus stands ready with the paddles (charging) to apply the same power. Perhaps we need to first stand aside (clear), come into His presence (contact), and get ready for a Jesus jolt (ker- pow)!
Are you ready?
Come and see,
Pastor Rob
